In Africa, the creative industry has seen a lot of improvement; notably, the music and film industry and Ghana is one of such countries. The Ghanaian film industry has been on the rise after it gained independence. Focusing on the film industry, I want to share with you some must watch Ghanaian movies. These are movies directed, produced and acted by great Ghanaian talents. This list of movies cut across different years and areas in our film industry for your consideration.

In no particular other of hierarchy, let’s jump right into it.

A STING IN A TALE (2009)

‘A STING IN A TALE’  won five awards at the Ghana Movie Awards in 2010, including the awards for Best Director and Best Writing among others.

SYNOPSIS

To the Synopsis of this film, it is based on a twisted tale of two unemployed graduates who embarked on a journey to make it in a world where you need more than what you have to get what you want. It is a film filled with thriller and drama.

This film is still a classic even though it was released in the 70’s. It portrays the true Ghanaian culture and has a touch of comedy for your delight.

SYNOPSIS

This film is based on a story about a father who refuses to agree to his daughter’s marriage to a wealthy man. The story chronicles the conflict between a family in post-colonial Ghana as they struggle to choose between love and money.

LOVE BREWED IN THE AFRICAN POT (1980)

Love Brewed in the African pot is a Ghanaian classic film released in the 80’s. This film reveals some great African tradition and culture. It gained an immediate popularity and was critically acclaimed throughout English-speaking African countries.

SYNOPSIS

This is a love story between Aba Appiah and Joe Quansah. Aba is the educated of the two, but instead of going to university, she becomes a dressmaker. She falls in love with Joe Quansah, a semi-illiterate auto mechanic. His love is less courageous than hers and his fisherman father warns him not to play with fire. Their relationship is further compounded by Aba’s father who would rather have her married to a lawyer.

KUKURANTUMI – ROAD TO ACCRA (1983)

SYNOPSIS

The Synopsis of the film is about a truck driver makes runs between Kukurantumi (a rural town) and Accra (the capital city of Ghana) with few problems until he is forced to replace his truck. In order to raise the money to get a new vehicle, he sells some stolen watches and promises his daughter in marriage to a rich merchant. Rebelling against this fate, the daughter runs off to Accra with her boyfriend.

SYNOPSIS

To the synopsis of this film; When Prince Wenambe hands the little kingdom of Kotengbi over to Mansa Musa to protect, he wins the throne from His father. To ascend the throne, though, he must find a wife. His choice is the beautiful Soraya who is betrothed to Dume the hunter. He is Prince and what he wants he gets, Wenambe marries Soraya in the time when Mansa Musa begins to sell the Kingdom of Kotengbi to slave traders. The folly of choice. Wenambe becomes a pawn of the gods; taunted daily by Alarka the old seer, he turns into a man troubled and confused, not even the son Soraya bears him is able to wipe away his shame. He becomes a ruler of slaves, but the gods still weave an intricate web, yarn after yarn, a new era is born, a new hope, though lined with the arrival of other slave traders even more powerful than Mansa Musa himself.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS (2010)

SYNOPSIS

‘The Good Old Days’, a 24-episode film, with different subtitles, treating different themes relevant to the Ghanaian family life. The film project deals with the adventure of a family of eight and is set in the 1950s and 1960s. It is a healthy mix of love, comedy, and tragedy which is designed to capture the nostalgic imagination of its audience and appeal to all age groups.

‘The love of AA’, the first episode in the series is an intriguing and compelling story of love, family life, childhood mischief, and pranks.

The second episode Papa Lasisi Good Bicycle’, Just like the maiden one, this episode depicts our society in the pre and post-independence era, revolving around the core family of Joe E. Mensah (Albert Jackson Davies). The main character, Papa Lasisi is a shrewd Abeokuta born businessman based in Sekondi.

Suffering to lose’, interrogates certain aspects of Ghanaian life, specifically family, friendships, death, and inheritance. The film seeks to re-examine these aspects of the Ghanaian culture and to provide a window to look into Ghanaian life, culture and traditions during “The Good Old Days”.

‘Heritage Africa’ a Ghanaian movie was awarded the Golden Stallion at FESPACO.

SYNOPSIS

The synopsis of this film talks about Kwesi Atta Bosomefi, the perfect civil servant, rises through the educational and religious regimen of British colonialism, only to humbly rediscover his African heritage. Kwesi Atta Bosomefi’s schooling and religious education have assured his social rise. Appointed African District Commissioner, Kwesi identifies himself with the English running his country. He goes as far as changing his name to Quincy Arthur Bosomfield. When the workers protest about their working conditions, Bosomfield sides with the ruling power against them.
