There are a lot of people who want to be actors. As a matter of fact our platform receives a lot of messages from people who are interested in becoming actors in Ghana and most of these people have a couple of things in common; they do not know what to do, where to start and who to approach.
Apart from the newbies, there are other actors who have been in the industry for a very long time but have not had their big break yet. They have been to a lot of auditions, join multiple film production houses but still not gotten there yet.
So this weekend Ghanafilmindustry.com met up with one of the youngest film producers in Ghana at the moment, Enoch Atakorah, to share with us some of the ways beginning actors can be able to gain success and rise to the top.
The producer had some impressive opinions but before we get into that, here is why we approached Enoch Atakorah in particular. Enoch Atakorah started out in the Ghanaian film industry as a production manager and worked with most of the film producers in the industry. During this time, he worked with some of the big names in our industry in terms of acting like Majid Michel, John Dumelo, Jackie Appiah, Kofi Adjorlolo, Adjetey Anang just to mention a few. He has witnessed a lot of actors rise to the top and others fall.
He is also the man behind the success of most of these new actors in the industry. He personally manages some of the fastest rising actors and a strong believer in giving other people the chance to prove their worth.
These are some of the reasons why we approached him and this is what he had to share.
According to the Before Noon producer, in acting talent is very important but it goes way beyond just talent and below are some of the factors.
Enoch believes loyalty is one of the most important qualities every actor needs, be it a beginner or an established actor. A lot of these big names are where they are now because they stayed loyal to their team, management and the people they started with. When some people get a little exposed in the industry and meet a couple of people, they feel like they now have the connections and can fly on their own, forgetting the person or people who introduced them to these industry players.
He also mentioned that, actors should always remember that, the reason theses industry players will listen to you in the first place is because of the person who introduced you.
There are a lot of big name actors in this industry whose careers have taken a heavy fall because of their character and some beginning actors also have the same problem. Some feel they are Prince and Princesses in their homes and want to be treated the same way when they get to the set, forgetting that is somebody else’s office. His advice is, beginning actors should be humble and respect everyone on the set or in the production.
Everybody wants to rise to the top, which is generally not a bad thing but the problem is, a lot of people are impatient and very desperate. This makes them move around a lot and do just about anything to get to where they want. Most producers know desperate people when they see them so the bad ones will definitely take advantage of them.
Moving from one Production house to another
This is a very common thing in this industry. There are a lot of actors who have been in the industry for a very long time but have not gotten there yet. You meet them on every set you go, you see them at every movie premiere hanging around the stars but you barely see them in any movie. Beginning actors must learn to stay with one production house, work with one agent or manager because no agent or manager will make sacrifices for actors who don’t stay at one place. According to these agents and producers, what are the chances that this actor will still work with them when he/she becomes big?
If you take a look at the career of some actors like Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Nelson, Yvonne Okoro, Majid Michel, John Dumelo, Adjetey Anang, they consistently starred in some particular producers’ movies till they became big. Beginning actors who want to be like these big names should remember that talent can get you noticed, but Loyalty, Character, Patience and sticking with one management team or production house will take you to the top.
Enoch Atakorah is the producer behind Before Noon, Victims, Royal Diadem, Last Night and wrapped up for his new movie “Smoking Gun” not too long ago and will premiere at Silverbird cinemas in April. It is filled with stars including Jackie Appiah, Toowsweet Annan, Edward Kuffuor, Peter Richie, Elikem Kumordzie, Helen Asante, Belinda Djata, Kobby Acheampong among others.
